The Governing Body at Brookside Primary School welcomes you!

Governors are a group of volunteers who include parents, staff and members of our local community. Our main role is to promote ongoing improvements in standards throughout the school, in partnership with Equals Trust.

The Full Governing Body meets twice per term to focus on business and financial matters, and school development, pupil welfare and the curriculum. We ensure that school policies are in place and adhered to and have a Policy Working Group to support this. We sometimes focus on more specific areas including Brookside’s future development.

We work with Equals Trust and the Headteacher to plan the school’s long-term strategic direction and to monitor and evaluate pupil progress. We help set the school’s aims and values and are involved in staff recruitment, including the appointment of the Headteacher.  Many of our responsibilities carry a statutory requirement, which means that we are obliged by law to carry out our statutory duties.

Our role is sometimes described as a ‘critical friend’.  This does not mean that we are there to criticise the Head or the school.  Instead we try to ask useful questions to gain a greater understanding of the school and to foster an ethos of continuous improvement.

Here is some information on our Governors.  We are a friendly bunch, so please feel free to stop any one of us in the playground, or contact the Chair of Governors via the school office, with any question you might have about the school. If we don’t know the answer there and then, we’ll know someone who does.

Brookside Primary School is a member of Equals Trust Multi Academy Trust.

Get To Know Some Of Our Governors

REESHA ARMSTEAD – CHAIR OF GOVERNORS, TRUST GOVERNOR

I am a disabled parent of two daughters, both of whom thrived at Brookside and have now moved on. I relish the input I have in supporting the school and have found that many of the skills I acquired through my studies and work around disability and social care have translated well in working with the Governing Body.

Having been a Governor at Brookside since 2010, I have seen a huge amount of change both in the world of education and at Brookside, and have watched the school go from strength to strength in terms of academic performance. Alongside this, I am extremely proud of all that we offer our children with a wide range of creative extracurricular activities and enrichment opportunities, enabling them to thrive and enjoy school.

I love being around children and helping them to foster a positive attitude towards diversity and help raise disability awareness across the whole school, with my Not That Different Programme. Whenever I’m in school, the children are always eager to see the tricks I can do with my wheelchair! In my spare time, I am a writer, an avid reader, I enjoy swimming, going to the theatre and spending time with my family.

JASON BILLIN – VICE CHAIR, TRUST GOVERNOR

I have lived in East Leake for many years, both of my children attended Brookside. I have returned to the Governing Body after a gap of ten years during which I have been active in Scouting and the DofE Award across Rushcliffe.

Being asked to re-join the Governing Body here at Brookside was a proud but daunting moment. Proud for the obvious reason that working with such a fine, dedicated staff is an honour – and daunting because I had already met some of the governors and was deeply impressed with their commitment and knowledge. I will do everything I can to enhance the team and provide support to all.

SARAH EVANS – STAFF GOVERNOR

I have been a governor for many years, starting just before my youngest son started school at Brookside. Before having a career change and starting work within education, I worked for a large bank as a coach and trainer (amongst many roles!) and gained many skills that have helped me be an effective governor. I am passionate about Brookside and the wonderfully enriched curriculum and opportunity it provides for our children.

On a personal level I enjoy spending time with my family, and two grown up sons.  I love going on holiday, visiting the cinema and spending time with our slightly loopy cocker spaniel!

TIM GREEN – PARENT GOVERNOR

I live in East Leake and have two children at Brookside.  They really enjoy being at the school and the opportunities they’re given to both learn and play.  As a parent, I naturally have an interest in how the school is performing and in the environment where they spend so much of their time.

I want to see Brookside maintain the excellent reputation and develop and improve where possible.  This includes not only the academic results the school is measured on, but also making it an even better, more enriching place for our children and the staff to be part of.  I’m pleased to have the opportunity to contribute to this as a Governor at Brookside.

HELEN STEVENSON – PARENT GOVERNOR

I am really pleased to have been elected as a Parent Governor on the Governing Body for Brookside Primary School and I hope to make a valuable contribution. The Governing Board are clearly committed to improving Brookside as a school and getting the best for the children who attend.

I live in East Leake and both of my two children attend Brookside. They enjoy being part of the school and the opportunities they have. As an experienced Primary school teacher, I have a good understanding of primary education. In a previous teaching role, I have been a Staff Governor for a school, so I understand some of what is involved. In my role as Parent Governor, I am looking forward to raising questions or making suggestions for the good of the whole school community.

LEWIS JAMES – TRUST GOVERNOR

I have three children who attend Brookside, and we as a family have lived in East Leake for nearly 10 years. It is a pleasure to join the the Board of Governors and be able to contribute in a meaningful way to what Brookside does as a school to enrich the lives of its children and the local community.

I am keen to contribute in a way that helps pupils access the best educational experience possible, supplemented with beneficial experiences outside the classroom, like OPAL play and other extracurricular opportunities (e.g. sports, music and social activities).
