Welcome to Brookside’s Online Safety Information Page. On this page, you will find lots of information on how to keep your children safe online, the things we have been doing in school and the our school’s computing curriculum document.

Please also read the following letter, written collectively by all the school’s in the East Leake area, regarding safeguarding your child’s access to smart phones and social media.  Read here.

Brookside’s Online Safety Rules

1)      Don’t share any personal information online – such as your home address, email address, mobile number or password

2)      Think carefully before posting pictures or videos of yourself.  (Once an image is online most people can see it and may be able to download it, it’s not just yours anymore.)

3)      Keep your privacy settings as high as possible

4)      Don’t befriend people you don’t know and don’t meet up with people you’ve met online.  (Remember that not everyone online is who they say they are.)

5)      Think carefully about what you say before you post something online and respect other people’s views.  (Even if you don’t agree with someone else’s views doesn’t mean you need to be rude.)

6)   If you see something online that makes you feel uncomfortable, unsafe or worried – leave the website, turn off your computer if you want to and tell a trusted adult immediately.

Social Media

There are lots of apps your children could be using to post pictures or communicate with friends. It is important to know which ones your child uses and to have regular conversations on how to stay safe when using them.

Our children in Y5 & Y6 have prepared an informative leaflet:

‘What My Parents Don’t Know About Social Media’

Please read – it offers valuable insight directly from the children’s experiences.

Remember- many Social Media apps have a age restrictions of 13 and over.

Parental Controls

Keeping children and young people safe online is one of the biggest challenges facing society today and it is all of our responsibility to ensure that children are educated to make positive, informed choices when they are online.

Below is a PDF aims to help you to set up parental controls to provide your child with a safer online environment.

A guide to Parental Controls

TikTok – Update Parental Controls with Family Pairing Feature (Dec 2020)

TikTok is used by many children younger than 13 despite its terms and conditions. Using the new Family Pairing feature can allow parents to guide their child’s TikTok experience in a safer way. Features include:

  • Search: Decide what can be searched for. This includes content, users, hashtags, or sounds
  • Screen Time Management: Sets how long your teen can spend on TikTok each day
  • Discoverability: Decide on the account being private (you decide who can see their content) or public (anyone can search and view content)
