Welcome to Year 1/2 where we not only build on our learning from Foundation with the younger children of the class but also where you will find some of the oldest children in Key Stage 1. We carry on learning through continuous provision and have time to be independent learners. We complete lots of challenges to support our learning and cover all areas of the curriculum.
In English, we have daily phonics sessions following the Read Write Inc scheme. We learn to read in a variety of ways through guided reading, 1-1 and whole class reading activities. We continue to develop our fine motor control to be able to form letters confidently as the year progresses. In maths, we use the White Rose Maths scheme alongside practical activities and a variety of maths resources to become confident mathematicians.
We cover an exciting and wide ranging curriculum which includes History topics about events beyond living memory, such as the Great Fire of London, and the lives of significant individuals from the past, such as Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. We use maps, atlases and globes to find out about the world around us. We find about famous authors, artists, designers, scientists and musicians and use their work as an inspiration for our own learning. We love using the iPads in the classroom, composing music, creating e-books and programming robots. We take part in a variety of PE from swimming, gymnastics and dance to individual and small team games.
Our aim is to enable each child to acquire the skills they need to become more independent, confident and resilient learners.
