We are always looking for children (or parents) to write articles about school events to go on the school website. Simply email your ideas to Mrs Hallam: mrshallam@me.com.
Well done to all the children who turned out to support the variety of floats during Saturday’s procession through the village. Brookside’s Lion King float proved to be, once again, a spectacle to behold and deserving of its ‘best in show’ recognition. I have to thank the outstanding input of energy and creativity by the volunteer group of parents for making such an event happen and the children throughout the school who produced face masks, palm fronds and floating butterflies. Well done and thank you again to all of those children and adults who designed, built, painted, dressed up, climbed on board, smiled and waved somewhere along the float's journey.
Thank you for everyone’s support during the recent Book Fair. As a result of hosting the Book Fair the school will be able to purchase £750 of brand new books. This is a wonderful achievement for a one day event. I hope all the children are pleased with the books they have bought and are enjoying reading them. Many thanks to the parents, staff, children and Mrs Brown/ Mrs Roberts for their help in organising the Book Fair.
This tournament has been running at Brookside since 2002. It is always a thrill to watch teams made up from our infants compete against our oldest juniors, while managing to hold their own. All tournaments have overall winners, however, this year following a keenly fought contest between Y5 and Y6, Y6 achieved their ambitions and lifted the shield.
May I say thank you for everyone’s exceptional generosity when donating cakes and coins for Yvonne’s Tsunami fundraising. Some of the cakes were beautifully decorated too. For those of you who are uncertain, Yvonne is the child in our Y4 class who wrote a letter to all of you appealing for donations and cakes. An incredible £443 was raised for the Red Cross’s Japan Appeal through the sale of the cakes and the origami activities that occurred during the day.
The BFG Race Night was a really enjoyable event for all who attended, as was the Mother’s Day coffee morning. £1300 was raised in total to support school projects, trips and events for the children. Thanks for all the hard work to all the volunteers on the BFG.
Well done to Jade, Adam, Joseph, Abi, Amber, Luis, Grace, Jennifer, Alex and Matt for their success in competition. The team of Year 6 children will represent Brookside at the Rushcliffe schools finals. Good luck to the team.
Our school chickens, Ribble, Ruby and Sparkey, have given us cause for celebration recently by laying their first eggs. If you haven’t seen our chickens please take the chance, they are homed beside the school entrance. You will also notice Rocky, who happens to be quite beautiful, amongst them. All of our chickens are Peking Bantams. May I say thank you to all the children and parents who have helped look after our chickens during school holidays and weekends. Your chicken endeavours are appreciated.
Mrs Whelport led the school and our children toward recognition as a ‘singing school’ with the school receiving silver Sing Up! status. Silver status is the stepping stone to going on toward gold status. To celebrate, all the children, in classes, performed songs such as ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’, ‘Waltzing Matilda’ and ‘Alice The Camel’. Each Thursday after school, Mrs Evans and Miss Wiltshire orchestrate Brookside’s school choir for Y3-Y6 children. If your child has an enthusiasm for singing and would like to join the ranks of the school choir, please contact Mrs Evans, Miss Wiltshire or the school office.

During the week of our production run here at Brookside, almost 1,000 people passed through the front doors to watch a series of outstanding performances (many of you visiting on several occasions). The stage was occupied by the children from the Foundation Unit (Christmas songs and home baking), the infants (The Nativity story), Year 3 & 4 (An Evacuees Blitz Christmas) and Year 5 & 6 (Shakespeare & Christmas celebration). My admiration goes to all the children and staff for their hard work, for learning so many songs and words and for making us all feel so terrifically proud of their achievements. (Mr Kenny)
We had a very successful anti-bullying week at Brookside, commencing with an effective and meaningful assembly by Year 6. On Thursday afternoon, all of the children split into groups for an hour to partake in a wealth of exciting activities with children from a different class. The week culminated in an assembly for 'children in need' where the children demonstrated some of the fantastic work undertaken during the week.
Bonfire night was very entertaining and the firework display was breathtaking. There were also lots of stalls, selling food and drinks! I really enjoyed the Bonfire night and hope those that went did as well! (Abi - Year 6)
A boys' and girls' team set off from school full of anticipation to compete against other schools at Rushcliffe Country Park. It was an agonising wait, for the competition to start. It was 30 minutes until the last school arrived. While we were waiting we did a warm up with Miss Wiltshire. There were 2 teams - a girls' team and a boys' team. The girls set off first. They each did 1500 metres. The girls' team was Abi C, Grace B, Amy C and Amber F. The boys' team set off after the girls finished. I was the 3rd one to set off after Jacob B and Matt H. The course was hilly in places and tough going - I was glad to see Euan waiting to take over from me! Hearing everyone cheer me on, helped me to reach the end and tag Euan. At the end we found out the girls' team came 8th and the boys' team came 10th. We were really proud of our achievement and enjoyed the competition. (Alex - Year 6)
Rocky, Ribble, Ruby and Sparky were the names chosen by the children and then drawn out of a hat in Assembly while the Pekin Bantams were settling in to their new home at school.
Our new look website has been redesigned over the summer holidays. A couple of pages are still under construction so please be patient during this time. If there is something you can't find, or if there is something you think should be included, please email us and let us know.
Thank you for turning out in such numbers and making Brookside’s Garden Party such a success. The weather was perfect and an incredible £2200 was raised for future school projects. The garden party represents at lot of hard work and dedication from many you and from many within the BFG fundraising team. Thanks for all the generous time and energy volunteering, whether it was organising, managing stalls, settings up, transporting, promoting or donating. Great work for Brookside from everyone. Thank you so much.
I really enjoyed Sports Day here at Brookside. The weather was kind again and it was great to see all of our children (mums, dads and toddlers too) race and compete as individuals, partners and teams. Thank you for all of your support and for making the afternoon such a rewarding one. Sports Week saw children throughout the school take part in a whole series of physical activities including street hockey, yoga, cheerleading & dance, street dance, cricket, athletics, long distance hiking, boccia, cycle safety and, as an extension to Sports Week, climbing and abseiling. Quite a list. We’ll be hosting Sports Week again next year with a whole new series of activities for the children.
Once again Brookside’s representation at the East Leake Carnival won the best float of the parade. For those of you who saw it, I’m sure you’ll agree what a dazzling lunar landing spectacle it was. Once again I am in awe of the creativity, endeavour and commitment shown by the dedicated team of volunteers who put together and make happen the Brookside float. Thank you to all of you who were involved. Well done, too, to all the children who dressed up as astronauts and aliens and who waved from the sides of the float. A special mention goes to Lara (Y4) whose winning design was published on the front of this year’s programme and to Henry (Y3) whose winning design will be on next year’s programme.
We are pleased to announce that we are having a Book Fair in school on Thursday 20th May. We hope that you and your children will be able to come along. The whole event will take place in the school hall. Each class will be allocated a time and we would like to invite all parents to accompany their children, if they wish. If you would like to order a book from the leaflet, will you please complete the form and send a cheque payable to Brookside School as soon as possible. There will of course be a wide selection of books available at the Book Fair and children may prefer to select books from the shelves on the day, as well as pre–order a book. Mrs Riding will be in the Book Fair as well as the class teachers to advise children if they need help with selecting a book. In addition there will be a session at 3.30 for any parents who are unable to come during the day, or who would like to come again! Our school will benefit from all sales. The funds generated will allow us to provide more books for the school. Last year we were able to buy books to the value of over £1,000 for use in the classrooms.
One of the aims of the curriculum here at Brookside is for the children to gain an understanding of the world community that they live in. Brookside has achieved an International School Award during the last year with our children embarking on activities including corresponding with a school in Uxegny, France, learning about the diversity within modern British society and engaging with global issues such as the Haiti disaster appeal. To further enhance the school’s links with the global community Brookside has been successful in joining a Connecting Classrooms project with the British Council and China. Brookside will be one of eight other schools within Nottinghamshire to link with schools in the city of Jinhua, eastern China. I am very fortunate as I have been given the opportunity to visit our linked school and will be embarking on the project this Saturday, spending a week with our partnership school. I look forward to internationalism becoming a key focus and strength of our school’s work, helping our children to understand a little more about the world that they live in today. (Mr Kenny)
Last week our children recorded a song for Trent FM called ’Raise Your Voice and Sing For England!’. It was a world cup song wishing the best of luck to the England football team and Fabio Capello as they embark on their quest for glory at this summer’s World Cup in South Africa. If the England football team manages to perform to the same standard on the pitch as our children did with collective voices, football fans are in for a summer to remember. The recording will be mixed with recordings from a number of other schools and aired on Radio Trent itself during Twiggy & Emma’s morning show at the end of May (exact time and date to follow). The recording will also be available for purchase across Nottingham with proceeds going to Nottingham University Hospitals Charity and the Shine Foundation, an organisation that helps protect vulnerable children locally and in South Africa.
