Thank you for turning out in such numbers and making Brookside’s Garden Party such a success. The weather was perfect and an incredible £2200 was raised for future school projects. The garden party represents at lot of hard work and dedication from many you and from many within the BFG fundraising team. Thanks for all the generous time and energy volunteering, whether it was organising, managing stalls, settings up, transporting, promoting or donating. Great work for Brookside from everyone. Thank you so much.
I really enjoyed Sports Day here at Brookside. The weather was kind again and it was great to see all of our children (mums, dads and toddlers too) race and compete as individuals, partners and teams. Thank you for all of your support and for making the afternoon such a rewarding one. Sports Week saw children throughout the school take part in a whole series of physical activities including street hockey, yoga, cheerleading & dance, street dance, cricket, athletics, long distance hiking, boccia, cycle safety and, as an extension to Sports Week, climbing and abseiling. Quite a list. We’ll be hosting Sports Week again next year with a whole new series of activities for the children.
Once again Brookside’s representation at the East Leake Carnival won the best float of the parade. For those of you who saw it, I’m sure you’ll agree what a dazzling lunar landing spectacle it was. Once again I am in awe of the creativity, endeavour and commitment shown by the dedicated team of volunteers who put together and make happen the Brookside float. Thank you to all of you who were involved. Well done, too, to all the children who dressed up as astronauts and aliens and who waved from the sides of the float. A special mention goes to Lara (Y4) whose winning design was published on the front of this year’s programme and to Henry (Y3) whose winning design will be on next year’s programme. Please
We are pleased to announce that we are having a Book Fair in school on Thursday 20th May. We hope that you and your children will be able to come along. The whole event will take place in the school hall. Each class will be allocated a time and we would like to invite all parents to accompany their children, if they wish. If you would like to order a book from the leaflet, will you please complete the form and send a cheque payable to Brookside School as soon as possible. There will of course be a wide selection of books available at the Book Fair and children may prefer to select books from the shelves on the day, as well as pre–order a book. Mrs Riding will be in the Book Fair as well as the class teachers to advise children if they need help with selecting a book. In addition there will be a session at 3.30 for any parents who are unable to come during the day, or who would like to come again! Our school will benefit from all sales. The funds generated will allow us to provide more books for the school. Last year we were able to buy books to the value of over £1,000 for use in the classrooms.
The class sessions are as follows:
| 9.00am - Foundation Unit | 9.40am - Year 1 | 10.20am - Year 2 | |
| 11.00am - Year 3 | 1.10pm - Year 4 | 1.50pm - Year 5 | 2.30pm - Year 6 |
One of the aims of the curriculum here at Brookside is for the children to gain an understanding of the world community that they live in. Brookside has achieved an International School Award during the last year with our children embarking on activities including corresponding with a school in Uxegny, France, learning about the diversity within modern British society and engaging with global issues such as the Haiti disaster appeal. To further enhance the school’s links with the global community Brookside has been successful in joining a Connecting Classrooms project with the British Council and China. Brookside will be one of eight other schools within Nottinghamshire to link with schools in the city of Jinhua, eastern China. I am very fortunate as I have been given the opportunity to visit our linked school and will be embarking on the project this Saturday, spending a week with our partnership school. I look forward to internationalism becoming a key focus and strength of our school’s work, helping our children to understand a little more about the world that they live in today.

Last week our children recorded a song for Trent FM called ’Raise Your Voice and Sing For England!’. It was a world cup song wishing the best of luck to the England football team and Fabio Capello as they embark on their quest for glory at this summer’s World Cup in South Africa. If the England football team manages to perform to the same standard on the pitch as our children did with collective voices, football fans are in for a summer to remember. The recording will be mixed with recordings from a number of other schools and aired on Radio Trent itself during Twiggy & Emma’s morning show at the end of May (exact time and date to follow). The recording will also be available for purchase across Nottingham with proceeds going to Nottingham University Hospitals Charity and the Shine Foundation, an organisation that helps protect vulnerable children locally and in South Africa.

Shortly before the Easter break our children engaged, through actions or planning, in enterprise activities. The aim of an enterprise focus was to allow the children to gain some experience of working with money and planning how to invest or use it. Our Foundation children fancy dressed as birds raising the funds to purchase dressing up costumes for the foundation unit, as well as bird feeders and food for the school grounds. Our Y1 children raised nearly £100 through a table top plant sale. They decided to offer their profit to homeless charities. Our Y2 children laid on the cakes and biscuits during parents evening. Nearly £200 was raised. Their profits are offered to a Farm Africa charity and will be used for fresh water purification. Our Y3 and 4 children have projects ongoing. Their aim is to raise funds to help contribute to a class trip. Our Y5 children have been active for a while trying to raise a contribution toward their Y6 residential trip. Over £260 was raised with a table top sale, while bag packing at Morrison’s in Clifton pooled over £400. Our Y6 children are project managing a renovation of our woodland area. They have raised £316 and will work alongside the BFG as they aim to achieve the RSPB’s Wildlife Action Award.
Well done to all the children for the achievements to date.
On February 3rd and 4th Ofsted inspectors visited Brookside for a full ofsted inspection. The inspectors looked at many aspects of the school and took into account the views of the parent community and the children. The inspection was a very successful inspection; the team were able to recognise the strengths we, school and parents, feel we have that make Brookside such a valued place. The team were also supportive when sharing with us areas to develop and were delighted to see that we, as a school, already had the areas identified. It was particularly rewarding to be recognised as outstanding with regard to the extent to which pupils feel safe, the healthy lifestyles that are promoted amongst our children and the lengths the school goes to in order to ensure that child protection and safeguarding procedures are in place.
The full report can be found using the link below. Alternatively, you can request a paper copy from the school office. Thank you to all of you who responded to the parent questionnaire and thank you to all of you who made the time to chat with the inspectors after school.

In order to raise money for the Haiti Disaster Appeal, the children at Brookside decided on a theme and organised different fundraising activities... The theme was A Hat for Haiti and so lots of children (and adults!) gave a donation and wore a hat for the day. Some children brought their musical instruments and raised money by busking before school. Other children brought in cakes and at the end of the day we had a cake sale and raised yet more money. After school, there was also a fun run and charity football match. The whole day was a huge success.
At Brookside, we managed to raise an incredible £682. Well done to everyone!
Brookside Primary School's attempt to help Haiti was a complete success. Brookside’s well known school council thought up the idea of a Hat for Haiti along with many other ideas such as busking, a cake sale and a sponsored run.
After the horrifying tragedy at Haiti, Brookside Primary School was compelled to raise money to restore Haiti and help all the people who live there. Brookside’s school council was the main architect of the attempt to help Haiti as well as Mr. Kenny and all the other teachers. The council thought of the ideas to help Haiti. The main idea and focus of the day was a Hat for Haiti. However, there were many other activities and ideas like a sponsored football match and run, a fabulous cake sale and busking.
The day was a great success and money was pouring in to help Haiti. There were lots of colourful hats and hundreds of fantastic and great tasting cakes and muffins. The amount raised for Haiti was a gobsmacking £682!!! Many thanks to everyone who helped raise money for Haiti.

This year, the focus is on cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is the name that is used when people use the internet to send nasty and upsetting messages to others. It can also be done by people using mobile phones, by sending messages and making nasty phone calls.
There are some great websites which offer help and advice.

Once again, our athletes did us proud at the Rushcliffe Indoor athletics competition.
To pick my favourite Robinwood moment was a very tricky task as everything we did was amazing. However in the end I decided to pick Raft Building!!! After a finger-numbing ten minutes of endless knots we were ready to test our raft out on the water. At first both rafts floated perfectly on the water in the lake but when a couple of people started to climb onto them they started to wobble. The race to Goose Poo Rock was on! Me, Charlotte and Dom paddled as fast as we could to Goose Poo Rock but then when we were around half way there Dom fell off taking his paddle with him I was still paddling but we were slowly going round in a circle and then all of a sudden Charlotte leapt off the raft into the ice cold water and grabbed hold off Goose Poo Rock. Unfortunately for me I was sliding off the raft into the water but guess what? I was being reeled in on our raft Aqua Blue. Afterwards we were all on the bank around the lake we still had to do one last thing…SKYDIVING!!! One after another we were flying into the water off our rafts we all got absolutely drenched. It was now definitely time to test out Robinwood’s showers. Charlie H
My favourite Robinwood moment was probably Piranha Pool because it was fun going across the pool on the swing and solving all the problems. Caitlin
My best Robinwood moment is when I was doing the piranha pool. When I was going over on the swing I fell in, I swam over to the other side. I did the codes on the padlocks, then everyone said turn the music off because it was freaking them out. Then we had to turn a tap so the water could push a ball out with a number. I found it funny. Reece
My most enjoyable activity was the Giant Swing. You were put into a harness and then strapped to a log. You were then pulled back and you had to karate chop the yellow wire to make you go. I went on the Giant Swing with Mr Lowther. It was very fast and felt brilliant. Alex
At Robinwood I had such an amazing time and could not ask for more. My favourite activity was everything! I could not choose, they were that good. However, I would say the trapeze was the scariest, even though I have done it before. Meghan
My favourite moment was the piranha pool. It was hilarious when one of my team mates fell in the water, he jumped out like lightning. But four of us chickened out but in the end they helped us. Luckilywe all survived! Miles
My favourite moment from Robinwood was the Zip Wire because I loved soaring through the air like a bird. I just wish I could go back. Jack W
My best Robinwood moment was in caving when we had to be a cave rescue team. Me and Joe were sent looking for the injured person. When we found him he was stuck in a squeeze. We sat there for about four minutes just laughing at the sight of him. It was quite funny!!! Rhys
My favourite Robinwood moment was doing the Trapeze when I didn't let my team down. Kieran

Thank you for everyone’s support at the recent Book Fair. As a result we will be able to buy £819.24 worth of books for the school. This is a wonderful achievement for a one day event. I hope that all the children are pleased with the books they have bought and are enjoying reading them. Many thanks to the parents, staff, children and Mrs Brown/Mrs Roberts for their help in organising the Book Fair.
Mrs J Riding - English Co-ordinator
Congratulations to the winners of our Guess Who competition - Elaine Cowley, Yvonne To and Miles and Ben Hirst.
The staff at Brookside were once cute children too! But can you guess who's who?
This competition was running during the BFG coffee morning to raise money for the Robinwood visit next September. However, many people needed longer to study the photographs before submitting their answers and so we're extending the competition closing date to Thursday, 18th December, with the winners being announced on Friday, 19th December.
To enter the competition, forms are available from the school office and cost 50p. Alternatively, you could email your answers but don't forget to pay 50p at the office! Thank you!

A groups of boys in Year 6 have initiated a fundraising venture to raise money to supply a freshwater well to a village in Senegal. The boys (Elliot, Jack, Josh B and Ben) took part in a triathlon which consisted of a one mile swim, a three mile cycle ride and a one mile run. Thank you to everyone who supported the boys and sent a donation into school.

Fantastic Achievement for Y3/4 Athletics Team
After coming first in our section of the Rushcliffe Indoor Athletics competition, Brookside secured a place in the final at Bingham. (We've reached the final before and knew how difficult the competition would be. However, the children were full of excitement and determination as they made their way to the leisure centre at Bingham.)
The team performed brilliantly in the field events, doing especially well in the speed bounce and triple jump. Then it was time for the relay races. It so was exciting watching the children coming first and second in all their races, but there were two heats and so it was difficult to work out just how well we were doing.
Finally, Andy Pike started to announce the results in reverse order and we waited anxiously for our name to be called. There was a bit of a mix up as one of the teams was missed out when the places were read out and we fully expected it to be us that he'd missed out. We were therefore amazed when he announced that Brookside had won the final!
This was a fantastic achievement for the children. We are now preparing for the Nottinghamshire County Finals which are to be held at the beginning of December.

Our hall displays show a sample of the wonderful art work that was produced during art week.

Mr Kenny, Mrs Sheldon and Mrs Hallam took the Year 6 children to Todmorden in Lancashire for a residential visit to Robinwood. Despite the miserable weather and torrential rain, everyone had a fantastic time and the children were extremely well behaved.

Our new look website has been redesigned to make it even easier to find what you're looking for online. A couple of pages are still under construction so please be patient during this time. If there is something you can't find, or if there is something you think should be included, please email us and let us know.
Our Y5/6 athletics team performed brilliantly and won the last of the three heats, guaranteeing them a place in the final at Bingham Leisure Centre.
As always, the competition at Bingham was extremely tough and the deputy mayor, who handed out the certificates and prizes, declared everyone a winner for getting through to the finals. We were proud to be placed 7th out of all the schools in the Rushcliffe Borough!
The team looked particularly smart, modelling the new athletics t-shirts and shorts, very kindly purchased by Ian and Michelle Ford. Thank you again!

There was a terrific performance last Saturday at Normanton–on-Soar Primary School. The tournament began with a 3-0 triumph to Brookside over Lantern Lane. Brookside kept it tight at the back, with Craig and Clarkie (Ben Year 5) solid throughout an exciting 1-1 draw against Sutton Bonington! Brookside went through as Group A winners.
Next Brookside faced a tough game against Costock in the semi final. Meanwhile, Lantern Lane had a toughie trying to crack Bunny’s outstanding goalie. Finally they scored a goal during Golden Goal.
Brookside then played some neat football against Costock with Kieran, Mason and Brad until Brad found a gap, high in the roof of the net making the score 1-0 to Brookside. Then Josh came on to make it 2-0.
In the final it was an East Leake derby against Lantern Lane. Brookside started on top and stayed on top, with some great saves from Simon. The final score was 4-0 to Brookside against Lantern Lane, Kieran and Mason both scoring twice. Brookside retain the trophy for another year!
