Homework

At Brookside we provide tasks for children to complete at home. While homework is not compulsory, there are many advantages in completing it. For pupils, these may include a sense of responsibility for their own learning, opportunities for additional learning time, improved pupil self-confidence and motivation, and the formation of study skills. For parents these may include sharing in their child's learning, showing an interest in their child's education and monitoring their child's progress.

Homework varies depending on the age of your child. The homework for Key Stage 1 children focuses on reading and spellings, while at the end of Key Stage 2, children have a structured homework programme.

Every Monday, the children are given a homework sheet (see example below). It explains the homework tasks for each night. More teachers are now including a column for parents to sign. This allows you as parents to acknowledge the homework tasks have been done, especially when no written evidence is available. This also allows you to communicate with your child's teacher when a homework task has not been done if you have been too busy or if your child found it too difficult.

Please do not hesitate to contact your child's class teacher if you wish to discuss any of these issues in more detail.
