Year 6 Homework Tasks

All homework tasks can be done in your homework book using the sheets that I give out every Monday. I will collect the work in on the following Monday, so it is up to you to structure your week. Blobs are given for homework and for getting your homework sheet signed.

There is also the option to do some of your homework tasks using email or the Internet.

Reading

Reading is just as important in Year 6. You should try to read for at least 20 minutes every night. Reading a good book is like becoming lost in another world, where you meet new friends and go on fantastic adventures. Don't forget to write down what you read in your reading diary.

Parents, please sign the reading diaries at least once a week.

Weekly Comment - You should be evaluating what you read and writing comments in your reading diary once a week. You can choose from a list of options; these are written on the inside cover of your reading diary.

Click here for a list of ideas to write in your weekly comment box.

Some Handy Homework Hints

LCWC - Look, Cover, Write, Check.
Each word should be looked at, covered over and written out at least four times.
The most important thing here is to check each word and each letter - carefully!

Mnemonics - This is a technique to help remember how to spell a word or part of a word.
A good example is 'We are weird' for the word weird, helping to remember it starts with 'we' not 'wi'.
Only use mnemonics for one or two tricky words, otherwise you'll forget the mnemonics!

Table Shoot Out - This is a game to improve the speed of times tables recall. It is most successful played in threes, where one person says a question and the other two compete to answer correctly in the quickest time, but can be adapted to be played with two people.

VCOP - Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation. These can help to improve any piece of writing.
Vocabulary includes ambitious or adventurous words, similes and metaphors.
Connectives are words that join sentences like when, if, because, although, however and despite.
Openers add extra detail to the beginning of a sentence... Trembling with fear, I made my way into the Piranha Pool.
Punctuation includes capital letters, full stops, commas, question marks, exclamation marks, speech marks, brackets, dashes, colons, semi colons and ellipses.
