The Foundation Unit
Brookside Foundation Unit comprises of 2 reception classes each comprising of 22 or 23 children. Mrs Rachel Clark (Rising Rockets) and Miss Polly Youngs (Shooting Stars) are the class teachers. Mrs Sarah Evans is an HLTA (Higher Level Teaching Assistant) and covers non-contact time for both classes, carries out some 1:1 support for both classes and supports learning in Rising Rockets. Mrs Andrea Hewitt is a part-time teaching assistant working with the Shooting Stars.
In the Foundation Unit we provide a happy, secure and stimulating environment where children can learn effectively at their own pace. We work with a curriculum that is suitable for very young children, and is designed to be really flexible so that
we can follow the children’s unique needs and interests.
There are times during each day when the children learn and play together in the unit and times when they do separate activities.
Learning and Development
Children learn skills, acquire new knowledge and demonstrate their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development. Children should mostly develop the 3 prime areas first. These are communication and language; physical development; and personal, social and emotional development. These prime areas are those most
essential for children’s healthy development and future learning.
As children grow, the specific areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas. These are Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the world; and Expressive arts and design.
